2008 National Business Women's Week

Isle City of Alameda Business and Professional Women celebrated the 80th annual National Business Women's Week™ (NBWW) at its Award Reception on October 25.  Women of Achievement honored with certificates of recognition from BPW Isle City , Supervisor Alice Lai-Bitker and Rep. Peter Stark were:

  • Joan Blades (CoFounder MoveOn.Org & MomsRising.org), LENA Award (Leadership, Education, Networking, Achievement) (Kathy Moehring, Executive Director of West Alameda Business Association, presenter)
  • Donna Layburn (Owner, the Marketplace), Business (Julie Baron, Owner, Julie's Coffee and Tea Garden, presenter)
  • Irene Kudarauskas (Executive Director of Alameda Family Services), Community Service (Mary Kenney, President Alameda Welfare Council, presenter)
  • Dr. Janet King (Senior Scientist, Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute & Professor, University of CA , Berkeley and Davis ) Science (Deborah Stebbins, CEO of Alameda Hospital, presenter)
  • Ann McCormack, Energy & Engineering Consultant and Chair of Alameda's Public Utilities Board, Public Sector (Alameda City Manager Debra Kurita, accepting for McCormick)  ( Kate Quick , President of the Alameda League of Women Voters, presenter)

Rep. Stark spoke of the gains made by women and the work that remain to be done.

Isle City's L.E.N.A. Award, which stands for Leadership, Education, Networking and Achievement. This award is named in honor of Lena Madesin Phillips, a founder of BPW/USA and BPW International.
