I am writing on behalf of Isle City Business and Professional Women to express our outrage at your recent advertisement campaign regarding Flat Buns. We find your advertisement offensive and degrading to women. The Business and Professional Women organization has been working for equality for women for 100 years. We hope that businesses in the year 2007 recognize that women are an important part of our society and economy. Therefore, we ask that you discontinue your advertisment campaign and show respect for the women of California and this country.

Proclamation presented by Alameda Mayor on 10/2/07.

Sheena Freeman sends a message about Zimbabwe!

"...Your last shipment arrived  recently and is being distributed...Your prayers are as much needed as your practical help. Bless you for caring."

Our East Coast member met with our BPW Kadoma, Zimbabwe, contact in Boston!

"I specifically asked Sheena about the impact of the material you send and she made it clear that the impact is so large, it cannot be measured.  Things are so bad there and to know that there are people a world away who care enough to do all you do is a tremendous boost to them.  The Isle City members need to know that what they are doing is truly appreciated and does make a difference."

At September meeting, members discussed writing to Rep. Stark to thank him for his support of women's issues and to ask about his stance on other legislation not usually covered in his emailed reports.  Sylvia as Leg. Chair wrote this according to member discussion:

Dear Congressman Stark:

Isle City BPW was pleased to have some of its members attend your Town Hall meeting last Saturday in Alameda. We want to thank you for representing the citizens of Alameda and the interests of women in particular.  In particular, we thank you for your co-sponsorship of: -- HR 1964 (the Freedom of Choice Act)
-- HR 2831 (the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act)
-- Your continued fight for women's rights by supporting the right of reproductive choice and the right to receive equal pay.
-- the Fair Pay Resolution Act
-- S 1841 (the National Museum for Women Act) introduced by Senator Collins.

We urge you to continue to work on these pieces of legislation and other issues of concern to working women.

On August 18, 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., Gloria Cox-Crowell (Co-Chair), Kevin Monroe and Doug Cole, representing the Allen Temple Baptist Church AIDS Ministry, will show a 10-minute DVD on the Mother of Peace Orphanage in Mutoko, Zimbabwe and will speak on the Church's AIDS Ministry's involvement, experiences and partnerships with AIDS relief efforts in Africa.

Outreach to the global community!
Isle City members are sponsoring a teenage girl to one week of leadership training camp in Kadoma, Zimbabwe.

On March 24, BPW Isle City sent another shipment by cargo ship to the AIDS clinic in Zimbabwe. Sorting and packing of 15 boxes took place the last two weekends of February and the first weekend of March. Engela Crous will receive the donations from the Trust in about eight weeks on behalf of BPW Kadoma.

Sheena Freeman, BPW Kadoma, said: "The clinic is not yet set up because of the financial and logistical problems in Zimbabwe, but volunteers are going into people's private homes to give support where needed. Just one example of the way inflation is careering up: the price of Coca Cola doubled between the preceding delivery and the most recent. One litre now costs nearly a thousand times what it cost me to buy my half acre of land (1998 sq. meters) and build a comfortable home in the best suburb in 1973."

On April 21, BPW/CA VP Kimberly MacVicar installed Isle City's 2007-08 officers. The new BPW Year starts May 1.
We wish our officers a successful year.

Our grateful thanks to the 2006-07 officers for a hugely successful year. Special thanks to President Dorie whose deep understanding of the people and organizations in Alameda created new ties for BPW Isle City.

Her energy and commitment never flagged and was in large part the contributing force behind this year's success.

Isle City member Vernadene Tolman in an e-mail:
...how proud I am to have had both Margaret Seaman and Pauline Reynolds as mentors in this wonderful organization... Without their help and guidance, I would never have had the experiences I was fortunate to have.

Dorie writes: Celebrating Martin Luther King Day this year for me is even more significance than usual!   We all can be happy in the San Francisco region, the East Bay & in Alameda in particular that our new AUSD elementary school is the first in the nation to be named for Ruby Bridges .  This school and Ruby Bridges herself remind each of us to work together for equality of all people beginning with children and their families.   http://www.rubybridges.com/story.htm

Working for equality as Martin Luther King did could teach each of us no matter what a person's ethnicity, gender, economic status, profession, spiritual beliefs, nationality, sexuality, age, body shape or geography all people are equal.   The United Nations in 1948 adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in case we needed reminding:   http://www.un.org/Overview/rights.html . Just mentioning types of prejudice locally or nationally or globally shows me how much has been achieved and what still hasn't for some people here or elsewhere.

Martin Luther King (1929-68) was the youngest man to ever win a Nobel Peace Prize (1964).  Today has been a national holiday in his honor for 20 years.  His “I have a dream” speech was voted in 1999 by one group the most famous speech of the last century.   In remembering Ruby Bridges & BPW's goals for women,  I'd like to mention one of Martin Luther King's refrains:  "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."   We all know that “character” is also relevant to fighting all prejudice and to working for equality for all women (whether those women do or don't have children).

Today I'm also reminded of BPW's founders (dating to World War I) as well as female activists such as Susan B. Anthony (1820-1906) and Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815-1902) who were not only suffragettes but abolitionists .   http://www.bpwusa.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=3678

BPW nationally & globally still works for women's equality, equal pay for women & equal opportunity for women to pursue their own training and/or higher education, to have options for their desired professions and to appreciate equitable career advancement for their labors--not just any women, but for all women whatever their ethnicity.

Today I read in a news service I see daily that Martin Luther King said "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter." Another reason to thank him!!

WOMEN INVESTING IN REAL ESTATE panel, January 8, 2007

Isle City of Alameda Business & Professional Women (BPW) has invited a panel of four high profile women to speak about their experiences and share their knowledge about investing in property other than personal residences.

Six outstanding women in the community were honored at the National Business Women's Week Awards Ceremony.

Project Africa
Since 2001, Isle City BPW's signature activity is Project Africa.  Members collect medical supplies and craft goods to ship to the Kadoma (Zimbabwe) BPW to help treat people inflicted with AIDS and HIV.  Additionally, the goods, particularly knitting materials, are used by the local women to provide income for their families.  Isle City has been recognized at various levels of BPW for this rewarding effort.  This year ACI waste management and the Public Works Dept. featured Project Africa in its donation collections.  The Wrap Africa in Love collection on America Recycles Day, Nov. 15th, to benefit Isle City’s Project Africa provided drop off locations for clean sheets, linens, etc.  This was publicized in local media and through the Alameda Unified School District.

The Ruby Bridges book was presented to Ardella Dailey, Alameda Unified School District Superintendant, on Tuesday, September 12 at Board of Trustees/School Board's first meeting of the school year.

Isle City President Dorie Guess Behrstock was recognized by School Board President Tracy Jensen and then presented the award winning Ruby Bridges book to Superintendent Dailey. President Behrstock first introduced Isle City Founder Margaret Seaman and exemplary member Juelle Ann Boyer and explained that BPW wanted to celebrate the opening of the new school in Alameda named for a six-year-old girl who was a leading personality of the civil rights movement.

Behrstock said, "Tthe AUSD School Trustees are visionary in naming a school for a woman and for also for impressing upon Alameda's citizens the importance of equal education for all peoples. With education, women can seek equal employment and become better community members." She stressed that women receiving equal education was important to the futures of all children! Ruby Bridges' example exemplified the equality African Americans in 1960 were seeking through equal access to education.

She also mentioned that Margaret Seaman and other members would be at the Back to School Night at Ruby Bridges on Sept. 14th to present a second Ruby Bridges Book for the school's new media center/library.

On Sept 14th, Margaret Seaman, Barbara Lytle, and Genette Beardsley made their way to the Media Center at Ruby Bridges Elementary School and without fanfare presented BPW's gift book for the school's use. Isle City BPW was warmly thanked for our kind gesture. We learned that Ruby Bridges herself will visit Alameda at the end of October!

Photos of Project Africa boxes being packed for Zimbabwe. "Kimberlee - I have received four of the five boxes you posted. Three of the boxes contained some very sophisticated things that our homebased caregivers would not know how to use, so I am distributing them among nurses and doctors who do a lot of charity work. Many pensioners cannot afford to eat, let alone pay the skyrocketing medical costs that are a fact of Zimbabwean life. Deep appreciation for your thoughtful generosity. May God bless each of you richly.  Sheena "
