Isle City President's Welcome

We are delighted to have you visit Isle City of Alameda Business and Professional Women here and hope you will return often for information pertaining to working women and women's effort for equity in the workplace. This web site includes information about:

Isle City of Alameda is the local organization for Business & Professional Women (BPW/USA).  Isle City was chartered in 1959. BPW/USA was founded in 1919 and BPW International in 1930.  Isle City members participate at all levels of BPW.

For almost five decades, Isle City members have worked tirelessly to advocate and advance the rights, status, pay and benefits for working women and their families locally, statewide, nationally and internationally.  BPW gives women opportunities for individual development, networking, fun and friendships.

I personally joined Isle City in 1979. Isle City BPW for all of us is a diverse group of generous colleagues, advocates and team players — we have members from Alameda, Oakland, San Leandro, San Francisco and way beyond. We have learned that our BPW members come together for their common goals and support each other in good times and through difficult patches.

BPW also inspires community service for its members and provides an excellent option for becoming aware of legislative issues pertaining to working women.  It should go without saying that we support women in their businesses and careers whether women are just beginning their work lives, are in mid career or now working in retirement.

While online, we encourage you to learn about the rich history of Business and Professional Women at all levels and the many activities of Isle City of Alameda BPW: Project Africa, Pink Ribbon campaign for breast cancer, Women's Equality Day—August 26th , our awards ceremony highlighting National Business Women's Week in October, and many more educational and social events over the year.

One of BPW's priority issues is Pay Equity.  If you believe that a woman should earn the same as a man for doing the same work, we want you to become a member of BPW.  As long as women giving equal service for the same work on average continue to earn less than men, women's retirement pensions and savings accounts will also be smaller.

In addition to information on Isle City's web site, please check out www.bpwusa.org and www.bpwcal.org for information about this organization's work for women.

Should you have questions about Isle City BPW or want to join this important organization, I urge you to contact me at president@islecitybpw.org. Together we can help improve the lives of today's working women and work to give females of future generations equality in the workplace and in their communities.

Feel free to send me an e-mail regarding information you would like to see on our site.  BPW is worth the investment professionally, personally and politically.  Check us out!

With best wishes,

JoAnn S. Ainsworth
2008-2009 President
BPW/Isle City of Alameda
